Corpus: Sphenoidal sinus

The term sphenoid sinus or sphenoid sinus' refers to a cavity in the skull of some domestic mammals, which is counted among the paranasal sinuses.

The sphenoid sinus is found in all domestic mammals, with the exception of dogs and small ruminants. In most cases, the cavity is divided asymmetrically into right and left compartments by a septum sinuum sphenoidalium.

The sphenoid sinus pneumatises the body of the praesphenoid bone (anterior sphenoid bone) and in older animals also the basisphenoid bone (posterior sphenoid bone). In pigs, the cavity also extends into the pars squamosa of the temporal bone.
