Corpus: Short posterior ciliary arteries

1. Definition

The posterior ciliary arteries are branches of the ophthalmic artery that arterially supply the ocular bulb dorsal to the equator and the optic nerve in the area of the optic disc.

2. Anatomy

The posterior ciliary arteries leave the ophthalmic artery at its junction with the optic nerve. They are grouped around the optic nerve and pierce the sclera in its vicinity. In the bulb, they supply the posterior part of the choroid and, via smaller branches, the optic disc.
