Corpus: Posteromedial central arteries
Synonym: paramedian arteries
1. Definition
The posteromedial central arteries are vascular branches that originate from the pre-communicating segment (P1) of the posterior cerebral artery. They can also arise directly from the basilar artery.
2. Anatomy
The posteromedial central arteries travel through the mammillary bodies, thalamus, and the wall of the third ventricle. Their supply areas include:
- Mammillary bodies
- Parts of the thalamus
- Posterior sections of the internal capsule
- Core areas of the pons
- Portions of the pyramidal tract
3. Clinical implication
Herniation of the uncus can compress the posteromedial central arteries, potentially leading to compromised blood flow and neurological deficits.
