Corpus: Polysplenia

The term polysplenia refers to a congenital malformation in which several small spleen organs are present instead of one large spleen. The small organs are usually dysfunctional.

Polysplenia can occur in isolation, but is usually accompanied by other gastrointestinal malformations, e.g. biliary atresia, situs inversus or intestinal malrotation. Malformations of the cardiovascular system, e.g. dextrocardia, Abernethy malformation or azygos continuity syndrome, may also be associated.
