Corpus: Deep transverse metatarsal ligament
1. Definition
The deep transverse metatarsal ligament is a narrow ligament that connects the plantar side of the heads of the metatarsal bones.
2. Anatomy
The deep transverse metatarsal ligament merges anteriorly with the plantar ligaments of the metatarsophalangeal joints. Cranial to the ligament, the tendons of the interosseous plantar muscles run to their insertion sites. It also serves as the surface of origin for the transverse head of the adductor hallucis muscle.
3. Function
The deep transverse metatarsal ligament passively supports and braces the arch of the foot.
