Corpus: Adipose capsule of kidney
Synonyms: renal fat storage, renal fat capsule
1. Definition
The adipose capsule of the kidney is a layer of renal fat classified as structural fat. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the position of the kidney and provides cushioning to protect the organ.
2. Anatomy
The adipose capsule is more pronounced on the dorsal and lateral sides of the kidney, with less development on the ventral side. It surrounds both the kidney and the overlying adrenal gland, and is enclosed externally by the renal fascia.
In cases of severe malnutrition, the fat content of this capsule may be significantly reduced.
