1 Definition

The collateral circulation describes the bypassing, circumventing circulation which can either be physiological or be generated by an acute respectively chronic disturbance of perfusion. It describes the branching as well as the use of collateral vessels instead of the main blood flow path.

2 Examples

  • Collateral supply of the heart muscle after a partial occlusion of a coronary artery
  • Collateral vessels located at the extensor side of joints
