German: Bradykinin

1 Definition

Bradykinin is a vasoactive peptide hormone belonging to the group of kinins. It is involved in the control of inflammatory processes with effects similar to those of histamine.

2 Biochemistry

Bradykinin is an oligopeptide with a molecular mass of about 1000 Daltons which consists of 9 amino acids. The exact amino acid sequence is:

3 Effects

Bradykinin binds to bradykinin receptors in the vascular endothelium and causes increased vascular permeability, as well as a change in tone of smooth muscle in the vascular wall. The result is vasodilation and increased release of liquid from the vascular system. In addition to that, bradykinin effects a local increase in nociception.
