Coccygeus muscle

1 Definition

The coccygeus muscle is a flat and tendineous, triangular skeletal muscle that forms part of the pelvic floor muscles.

2 Anatomy

The coccygeus muscle is located at the posterior edge of the levator ani muscle. Its origin lies at the ischiadic spine of the ischium and at the sacrospinal ligament. Its insertion lies at the lateral edge of the sacrum and at the interior surface of the coccyx.

3 Innervation

The innervation is provided by the muscular branches of the sacral plexus (S3-S4).

4 Function

The coccygeus muscle serves, together with the piriformis muscle the reinforcement of the pelvic floor.
