Why Healthy Sleep is Important and How to Get it

Sleep is important for a variety of aspects in life. While we sleep, your muscles repair themselves, your body and brains energy is restored and your hormones are reset in a way that promotes alertness in the morning. Without a healthy night’s sleep, we are less likely to be productive, energetic and overall successful.

However, in today’s technologically connected world, where we can be contacted by anyone at any time, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to achieve a healthy night’s sleep. With sleep being so important for your physical and mental health, it’s important that you know how to get healthy sleep.


1. Routine is Crucial As with most things in life, you can’t hope to achieve much without a plan. So, if you’re looking to get better sleep, it’s important to create a routine. With a routine, you can be prepared to sleep on time, finishing your activities early and giving you time to relax before bed. If you don’t give yourself time to relax, without distractions, you will go to bed with work on your mind, incoming texts, and any amount of other distractions. You need to develop a nightly routine that suits your lifestyle which you can follow each and every night. This routine will make it simple for you to get ready for bed, which is important for healthy sleep.


2. Avoid screens before bed Technology has made its way into almost every aspect of our life, which is horrible for our sleep. Many of us message friends on our phones while we’re watching TV and browsing online shopping on our laptops. There are screens all around us, which can make life easy, but can greatly impact our sleep. Avoiding screens at least an hour before bed can help your body relax and prepare for sleep.


3. Use sleep aids Everybody is different and what helps you sleep will depend on the individual. Things like the firmness of your mattress, your pillow, blanket, the temperature and the amount of light in your room can all impact on your sleep. Finding the things that make you most comfortable is important for healthy sleep.

Many people may suffer from sleeping issues like insomnia or sleep apnea. Such issues can stem from a variety of issues but identifying them and finding ways to address them is important. Sleep apnea can seriously impact your health and sleep, and you may require a CPAP machine or alternative remidies. It’s important to look at your options and invest in what can help you get a healthy night sleep.


4. Avoid caffeine, sugar and alcohol at night What you eat and drink is something that you might not be aware of which is affecting your sleep. Caffeine, sugar and alcohol can all negatively impact your sleep. While these things will keep you alert and make it harder to fall asleep, they can also prevent you from getting deep sleep. Deep sleep is an important part of your nightly sleep as it’s where your body restores energy and mental cognition.

It’s often recommended that caffeine should be avoided after 2pm or 6 hours before bed. Avoiding sugary snacks, drinks and alcohol will help your body fall asleep come bed time.

5. Eat healthy, natural foods While you should avoid sugary and alcoholic foods, eating healthy foods, particularly leafy greens and grains can help with healthy sleep. While leafy greens, grains and nuts are good for your overall health, they also contain magnesium which can work as an anti-anxiety and anti-stress agents, which will help you relax for sleep.


6. Exercise is Key Exercise and sleep go hand in hand. The better quality you get of both, the better your overall health will be. Exercise is vital for both your physical and mental health, as is sleep. Exercise can help to reduce stress, which in turn will help you when it’s time to relax for bed.


7. Clean your room It’s often said that the space you live in reflects your mental space. The more clutter your room has, the more distractions there are, and the quality of your sleep can take a hit. Cleaning your room is simple to do and can have a great impact on your sleep. It’s much easier to relax in a clean space you enjoy being in.


Getting a healthy night’s sleep isn’t difficult but it’s very important for your health and ability to perform at your best. By developing a routine, watching what you eat and finding the things that make sleeping easier for you, you can achieve healthy sleep and improve how you feel.
