Tonsils are lymphatic organs that are located in oral cavity and pharynx. In a more narrow sense the palatine tonsils (tonsillae palatinae) are denoted as tonsils.

As a part of the immune system tonsils support the defence of pathogens that would otherwise be able to colonise mucosal tissue of digestive or respiratory tract.
