Synonyms: retinal mapping
German: Retinotopie

Retinotopy refers to the mapping of the retina to neurons in specified areas of the brain — specifically the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and the visual cortex. Since the topology of the retina is preserved, the orderly spatial information coming from the retina also remains preserved. This creates what is often referred to as a retinotopic or visuotopic map being created within specific parts of the visual system. Retinotopy has been found to occur in many mammalian brains.
