1 Definition

The qSOFA score is a simplified version of the SOFA score. It is a bedside test used in preclinical situations or the emergency room. It can be used to assess the likelihood of an infection being present.

2 Background

The SOFA score is an established score for the classification of intensive care patients. The classification is done through various parameters that judge the functions of different organs. The qSOFA-score (short for quick SOFA score) is a simplified version that was developed by the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. This score aims to be a quick and simple tool for approximating a patient’s risk of developing a sepsis. For that reason, parameters that require laboratory medicine have been either replaced by values that can be gathered bedside or disregarded completely.

The outcome is expected to be bad for the patient when two of the following three criteria are found true:
