Portal circulation

1 Definition

A portal circulation are connecting veins, which are an additional network of vessels between arterial and venous circulation. The veins between the connected capillaries are called portal veins.

2 Background

Portal circulations enable an effective clarification of the venous blood or a contextual separation of transmitter (eg hormones) which have different functions in different systems ( eg thyrotropin releasing hormone in hypothalamohypophysial system and gastrointestinal tract)
