Nutrient Foramen

1 Definition

The nutrient foramen is a small orifice inside of the substantia compacta of a bone. It contents the arteria nutricia, which is supplying the bone with nutrients.

2 Background

Referring to tubular bones the nutrient foramen can by found in most cases in the area of the proximal diaphysis.

3 Clinical significance

Regarding a X-ray image the nutrient foramen can be misinterpretated by unexperienced investigators as an oblique fracture of the bone shaft.
