German: Metaphyse

1 Definition

The metaphysis is a part of the tubular bone, which lies in between of the shaft (diaphysis) and the epiphysis.

2 Background

During the growth-period, the metaphysis sustains the epiphyseal plate, which is responsible for longitudinal growth. Referring to an adult individuum, the term "metaphysis" describes the rather blurry defined area of the diaphysis of long tubular bones, which is near to the epiphysis and mainly consists of spongiosa.
