Islet cells

1 Definition

Islet cells form the main parenchymatous elements of the pancreatic Islets of Langerhans.

2 Division

In the Islets of Langerhans five different types of cells can be distinguished:

  • A cells (α cells): about 10 to 20% of the endocrine islet cells
  • B cells (β cells): about 70 to 80% of the endocrine islet cells
    • Production of Insulin and storage in β granula
  • D cells (δ cells): about 5 to 10% of the endocrine islet cells
  • PP cells: less than 2 % of the endocrine islet cells
  • Ghrelin producing cells (ε cells):
