Groove of the back

German: Rückenrinne

1 Definition

A groove of the back is a midline of the dorsal side of the trunk which is visible in both genders.

2 Anatomy

The groove of the back starts approximately below the seventh spinous process and is formed by the fixation of the subcutane tissue at the relative spinous process respectively lateral of the muscles of the back. In men the groove starts to disseminate in the regio sacralis into the flat sacral triangle and in women into the rhombus of Michaelis. In the area of the thoracic spine the groove is mostly visible. The visibility of the groove of the back depends on the development of the muscles.
