Extensor pollicis brevis muscle

1 Definition

The extensor pollicis brevis muscle belongs to the deep layer of the forearm extensors.

2 Devolution

The origin of the muscle lies in the posterior surface of the radius and in the interosseous membrane of the forearm. Its tendon pierces the 1st tendon compartment of the extensor retinaculum and inserts in the proximal phalanx of the thumb.

3 Innervation

Its innervation is provided by the profound branch of the radial nerve, with fibers from the C6 to C8 segments.

4 Function

The extensor pollicis brevis muscle effects an extension and abduction of the proximal phalanx of the thumb.
