Ellipsoid joint

1 Definition

The ellipsoid joint is a variant of shape of a true joint, which possesses one concave and one convex articular surface whith an oval-shaped cross section. The articular socket is bigger than the articular head.

2 Biomechanics

The ellipsoid joint owns just like the saddle joint two motion axises and can perform four kinds of movement:

As well, ellipsoid joints enable a minimal movement of rotation. A typical example for the ellipsoid joint is the hand joint.
