Descending aorta

German: Aorta descendens

1 Definition

The descending aorta is the descending part of the main artery (aorta), which immediately connects to the aortic arch.

2 Classification

The descending aorta can be divided into two parts:

  • Thoracic aorta, also referred to the thoracic part or the pars thoracica aortae
  • Abdominal aorta, also referred to as the abdominal part or the pars abdominalis aortae

At the height of the fourth or fifth Lumbar vertebrae (L4, L5), the descending aorta splits into the right and left common iliac arteries. The median sacral artery is a small continuation in the original direction.
