Collateral ligament

German: Kollateralband

1 Definition

Collateral ligament refers to the ligamentous structures which proceed sideways, more precisely medial and lateral, of the joint respectively of the articular capsule.

2 Function

The collateral ligaments stabilze primarily hinge joints against forces which are not contained in the movement plane of the joint, for example valgus stress or varus stress.
