1 Definition

The ball-and-socket-joint is a version of a diathrosis, in which the corresponding parts consist of a spherical, ball-shaped part of joint and a cup-like depression called the joint socket.

2 Biomechanics

Concerning the ball-and-socket-joint the center of the ball-shaped part represents the pivot point of the joint. There are three various axes of spacial movement by which a movement of any kind can be performed. Accordingly there are three degrees of freedom enabling movements in all three spacial planes. The nearly unlimited mobility of the ball-and-socket-joint is only restricted by the sourrounding articular capsule and ligaments, which serve a safe conducting of movements.
