Aortic arch

Synonyms: Arcus aortae
German: Aortenbogen

1 Definition

The aortic arch is an arc-shaped vascular section of the aorta, which is found between the ascending aorta and the descending aorta.

2 Anatomy

The aortic arch is located within the superior mediastinum at the height of the sternal manubrium. Laterally from the right and dorsolaterally to the left, it encompasses the pars cervicalis of the trachea above the tracheal bifurcation. There, is crosses the oesophagus and supplies the descending aorta, which extends behind the oesophagus.

The supra-aortic vessels arise from the aortic arch:

On the caudal side is the aortic body.
