Superior auricular muscle

1 Definition

The superior auricular muscle is a thin, fan-shaped skin muscle of the head that counts among the exterior muscles of the ear. It is the largest ear muscle and forms part of the mimic muscles.

2 Devolution

The superior auricular muscle origins in the lateral border of the epicranial aponeurosis. Its fibers converge into a thin tendon which inserts into the superior part of the auricle.

3 Function

Its contraction leads to a movement of the auricle towards cranial direction.

4 Innervation

The superior auricular muscle is innervated by the facial nerve (VII).
