Standard anatomical position

1 Definition

The standard anatomical position defines in fields of anatomy an imaginary plane which runs horizontally through the human skull. It was defined 1882 by anthropologists on a congress in Frankfurt am Main.

2 Anatomy

The standard anatomical position runs from the lowest point from the lower orbital margin to the uppermost point on the upper margin of the outer auditory canal (Meatus acusticus externus).

3 Clinical significance

Originally, the german horizontal was used for craniometrics. Nowadays it serves as an adjusting plane for creating CT respectively MRT pictures, as well as X-ray images of the head. In dentistry the standard anatomical position is used as a referencial plane.
