Roussy-Dejerine syndrome

Synonym: analgesia dolorosa

1 Definition

The Roussy-Dejerine syndrome is a thalamic overreaction caused by an ischemia of the lateral nuclei of the thalamus.

2 Symptoms

A progression of the disease may start with a loss of sensation in half of the body. After few days the patient will experience pain with just a mild stimulation. This pain usually starts with a delay to the initiation of the stimulus and prolong after the stimulus has already stopped. Patients with Roussy-Dejerine syndrome usually have normal reflexes and no hemiparalysis of the affected body side. The affected body side is alway the contralateral one from the involved thalamus.
