1 Definition

A passive insufficiency is present if a muscle can be stretched only limited what results in the inhibition of an active final position of the joint.

2 Physiology

In the passive insufficiency the muscle would be able to contract further but its anagonist inihibit this motion. In case of a muscle working on two joints the passive insufficiency is physiological but in case of a muscle working on a single joint it is pathological.

3 Examples

The passive insufficiency makes it impossible to make a fist while the wrist is in palmar flexion.
