Musculophrenic artery

German: Arteria musculophrenica

1 Definition

In the area of the sixth rib, the musculophrenic artery emerges as a lateral terminal branch of the internal thoracic artery.

2 Anatomy

The musculophrenic artery supplies the diaphragm and part of the abdominal muscles with arterial blood. It supplies the 7–11th anterior intercostal branches. In the diaphragm, it anastomises with the superior phrenic artery.
