Medical Cybernetics

German: Medizinische Kybernetik

1 Definition

Medical Cybernetics denotes a section of cybernetics. It indicates a working program for applying systems theoretical, information theoretical, connectionistic and decision theoretical concepts for biomedical research and clinical medicine (adapted from Dietrich 1999-2004).

2 Branches

2.1 Medical Systems Theory

Subject of medical systems theory is identifying, describing, quantifying and modelling physiological dynamics in healthy and diseased organisms in order to gain new and deeper insights in organizational principles of life and its perturbations.

2.2 Medical Information and Communication Theory

Based on the awareness of information as an essential fundament of life, medical information and communication theory tries to mathematically describe signal transfer processes in different physiological layers.

2.3 Connectionism

Connectionistic models specify information processing in neural networks and thus form a bridge between biological research and technical application.

2.4 Medical Decision Theory

The goal of medical decision theory is formulating evidence based foundations for clinical decision making.
