ICD code

German: ICD-Schlüssel

1 Definition

The ICD code is used in medical sciences to classify diagnoses. The abbreviation "ICD" stands for International Classification of Diseases.

The ICD is a code initiated and administered by the WHO, which assigns each diagnosis a code with up to 5 digits. The code has the format X00.00, where X denotes a letter from A-Z, the zeros for a digit from 0-9. The last digit codes the localization. A lateral meniscus torn at the posterior horn for instance has the ICD code M23.35

The ICD currently is in its 10th revision (ICD-10).

Usage in Germany: Besides the official WHO version, a special German version exists from 2004, the ICD-10-GM (German modification). It is administered by the DIMDI.

According to §§ 295 and 301 of the 5th edition of the Code of Social Law (SGB-V), physicians and hospitals in Germany are bound to code a diagnosis according to ICD.

The ICD together with the [OPS] code for hospitals form the basis for the DRG system, which is the basis of calculation for the payment of services and benefits in Germany since 2003. This system aims at controlling the development of costs despite the increasing strain on the health system by demographic development.
