Bucconasal membrane

German: Membrana bucconasalis

1 Definition

The bucconasal membrane is a transient embryonic structure that closes the choanae and separates the olfactory organ from the primitive oral cavity (stomodeum).

2 Background

The bucconasal membrane is a thin epithelial layer of tissue. It connects the medial nose bead with the entire nasal cavity. In the course of development of an embryo, it tears, so that the primitive choanae are connected to the oral cavity.
