Corpus: Synovial sheaths of digits
Synonym: finger tendon sheaths
Definition
The synovial sheaths of digits of the hand refer to the tendon sheaths of the fingers, reinforced by annular ligaments and oblique ligaments.
Anatomy
The finger tendon sheaths begin approximately at the level of the distal ends of the metacarpal bones and extend to the distal interphalangeal joint (DIP). The tendon sheath of the little finger is typically (about 71 %) connected to the carpal tendon sheath (palmar carpal tendon sheaths).
Clinic
Tendovaginitis of the finger tendon sheaths can spread to large parts of the hand due to the V-shaped communication between the tendon sheath of the thumb and the little finger. In the case of a bacterial infection spreading in this manner, it is referred to as a V- or Y-cellulitis.
