Definition
The subscapular artery is a branch of the axillary artery.
Course
The subscapular artery is the largest branch of the axillary artery. It originates in the distal third of the vessel on the posterior wall of the axillary fossa and descends along the lateral border of the subscapularis muscle. After a relatively short course of 4-5 cm, the vessel divides into two terminal branches, with one continuing caudally and the other forming a curved cranial trajectory. The subscapular artery is occasionally accompanied in its course by the corresponding subscapular vein.
