Corpus: Proximal interphalangeal joint
Definition
The proximal interphalangeal joint, abbreviated as PIJ or PIPJ, is the joint between the proximal phalanx (base phalanx) and the middle phalanx (medial phalanx) of a finger or toe.
Anatomy
The proximal interphalangeal joints are hinge joints stabilized by tight collateral ligaments. These include:
- collateral ligaments (ligamenta collateralia)
- accessory collateral ligaments (ligamenta collateralia accessoria)
- phalangoglenoid ligaments (ligamenta phalangoglenoidalia)
They allow for extension and flexion. Additionally, a fibrocartilaginous structure, the dorsal plate, is located in the area of the PIJ.
Clinic
The proximal interphalangeal joints are affected in the context of Bouchard's arthritis.
