Corpus: Capitate bone
Definition
The capitate bone is a carpal bone of the distal row. It owes its name to its relative size and rounded shape.
Anatomy
The capitate bone is located approximately in the middle of the distal carpus; it borders radially on the trapezoid bone and ulnarly on the hamate bone. It is in articular connection with both bones. Proximally, the capitate bone articulates with the distal surface of the scaphoid bone and the lunate bone and is thus involved in the mediocarpal articulation. Distally, the bone borders on the metacarpale bone III and thus forms part of the carpometacarpal joint.
Dimensions
The capitate bone has a length of approx. 24 mm and a width of approx. 16 mm. This makes it the largest of all carpal bones.
